Volcanoes National Park- Kilauea Iki Trail...private tour

Our Volcano tour drives the eleven mile loop around  Crater Rim Road  stopping at Halema'uma'u, a lava shield capped with a pit crater,  and the observatory. Then we will hike down into Kilauea Iki to the caldera. The tour walks through beautiful 'ohia lehua/ fern rainforest (Wao Kele O Puna) with ferns reaching 30 feet high. The Hawaiian honey creepers, the apapane, amakihi and I'iwi live here. You then enter a lava moon scape of immense destruction. The Kilauea Iki hike will not follow the usual trails and deviate to a much more interesting but little used path. After hiking the volcano and a visit to the art center we will take a special hike to a koa forest, a native hardwood tree. This trail is very special and not in tourist books. Kilauea Iki is a 3 hour hiking tour with moderate climbing. The koa forest trail is a half hour hike and easy. Pick up in Keaau and our cottages. Lunch and day packs are provided. Good hiking shoes are advised. 5-6 hours for the tour.

$125 per person.  On this tour you will learn about Hawaiian history, language, hula, plants and volcanic geology.

For the past 40 million years the Hawaiian hot spot has pumped out 82 volcanoes that today form the Hawaiian Islands. The source of this heat lies 50 miles underground.  The Big Island has five volcanoes the highest being Mauna Kea at 13,796 feet. Kilauea is the youngest and most active volcano raising to 4093 feet . Kilauea has been erupting for the last 17 years and it's   Pu'u O'o vent is the source of the lave flows today.                                                                                                                                 back to top       e-mail us

Lava Flow ViewingTour...private tour

I am not doing lava viewing tours at the present time.

As of June 20th the lava is flowing in Volcanoes National Park. It is a mile and a half hike to the flows and it is the best I have ever experienced.   You should be staying on the Hilo side of the Island to travel to the flows. You have a seven hour round trip drive if you are staying in Kona.

$150 per person We will tour the Park before going to view the flows. Tour lasts from 5-6 hours.  Lava photos

Mauna Kea Forest Trail and star gazing...private tour

Hike the Pu'u o'o Trail on Mauna Kea. Beautiful old growth koa and ohia kipukas. Birding is excellent and views of Mauna Kea are wonderful. One of my favorite  hikes for viewing endangered native birds. The hike alternates between stark lava flows and old growth forest.  Hiking shoes and binoculars advised. Moderate hike. We will then drive up to the observatory to view the star. Tours starts at 3PM.

$150 per person.

Mauna Kea is the highest mountain in Hawaii at 13,796 feet. It last erupted about 4500 years ago. Its summit is often capped in snow and is home to a large astronomical complex.      e-mail us
