Our Koa forest hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Koa tree is a unique native hardwood tree of Hawaii. It grows only on higher elevations of the Hawaiian Islands. Very few Koa forests remain in Hawaii due to the over use of its beautiful wood and cattle grazing. Volcanoes National Park contains some great Koa Kipukas growing on the slopes of Mauna Loa. Very good native honey-creeper birding. The Koa forests are located 30 minutes from our vacation rental houses
