Sydney Australia

The variety of events and activities around the harbor quay provide much entertainment. This mime artist rounds out his impersonation of Mozart by whistling his music, on request. His rendition of Eine Kleine Nachtmusick wasn’t bad! And the photo cost only a couple of dollars.

These 6-foot high, wooden bears belongs to the colorful exhibition of United Buddy Bears—124 ambassadors for peace traveling the world to raise funds for UNICEF. They represent the member countries of the United Nations and were painted by artists from their respective countries. It was a thrill to see them all lined up along the quay, extended arms touching. The quote under the Albert Einstein bear said it all: “Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved through understanding.”

This Aboriginal man in traditional “dress” was playing a didgeridoo, considered to be the world’s oldest wind instrument, with accompaniment from his CD. Aboriginals are the invisible people of Australia. Everyone knows the history of their treatment under colonial rule was horrendous, and their social problems endure, but by and large white Australians apparently prefer to pretend they don’t exist—except when it comes to using their culture in interpretive facilities or their fascinating, mystical art for adornments. In the cities, Aboriginals seem lost and disenfranchised, but they live together in small communities along the coasts and in the outback. Our travels took us past a few of them.
